The NBA season has been on since October 17, and already there have been some surprises. From the Pistons at one point being 14-6 and second in the Eastern Conference, beating teams like the Celtics, to Golden State losing to the Kings (yes you read that right), to Lonzo Ball being among the worst in field goal percentage through the start of their career in NBA history.
Later this week/weekend there will be a post about Detroit City F.C. and why the MLS does not appeal to me or many people who support DCFC, the team that plays in the NPSL and will be very angry if Detroit gets an MLS team. James Harden is This Year’s Russell Westbrook
Last year, Russell Westbrook took a team to the playoffs that for the first time in his career didn’t have Kevin Durant, and averaged a triple-double per game, the first person to do that since Oscar Robinson. Harden isn’t averaging a triple-double, but he is leading the league in PPG with 32, and assists per game with 9.8. However, Westbrook led the Thunder to 6th in the Western Conference in the regular season last year. Harden has his team in first place. This could be due to the fact that the Rockets have CP3, who is another superstar. The Thunder didn’t have any better than average players beside Westbrook.
Lonzo Ball’s Historically Low Field Goal %, And His Dad’s Crazy Caims
Lonzo Ball may have 2 triple doubles and be playing better than critics expected, but you can’t ignore the fact that he is only shooting 31%, and 25% on 3 pointers. Not only that, Lavar is wrong but won’t admit it. It is too hard to talk about the Balls without mentioning him so here are some of the things he has said his son would do.
“Put Steph Curry on UCLA and put my boy on Golden State and watch what happens.” As much as I hate the Warriors and their players, I have to say that if this happened, the Warriors might not win a title, and UCLA may have made it to the Final Four. Lonzo Ball is not as good as Steph Curry and that’s true whether you like or dislike either of them.
“It’s already a done deal. I got the trophy already.” That is what Lavar said about whether Lonzo would win Rookie of the Year this year. Well, Jayson Tatum is playing well better than Lonzo is right now, so I wouldn’t count on it.
The Pistons Are in 4th
Even though they were in 2nd place earlier in the season, they have now dropped behind Cleveland and Toronto. But as long as they stay where they are now, they will have homecourt advantage in the playoffs for the first round. One of the key reasons why the Pistons are doing better than last season is Andre Drummound’s free thow percentage. He is shooting 62% from the line, compared to just 38% last year. Another reason why is Avery Bradley. He is averaging 15 PPG, where KCP was averaging 13 PPG last year. Obviously KCP is gone, but the Pistons found a good replacement for him.
Warriors Not as Hot?
And finally, the Warriors aren’t playing as well as last year. They are behind the Rockets in the Western Conference standings, and Steph Curry is out with a right ankle injury. He will be re evaluated in 2 weeks. There is nothing to worry about if you are a Warriors fan, I just wanted to point out that they are not playing as well as last year.
